SWQ Thunder FC holds an Advanced Licence to participate in Football Queensland FQ Academy program. This involves our Academy teams training 3 nights per week and travelling throughout SEQ to play against other FQ Academy clubs.
For the 2026 season our club has been assigned to FQ Academy 4 (Boys) and FQ Academy 3 (Girls) leagues based on our annual club assessment score. We are currently a bronze rated club steadily building its credentials in an effort to realise silver shield status. The club is similarly committed to achieving promotion to higher leagues.
In 2025, Thunder was one of the most successful clubs in the respective leagues in which it fielded teams as illustrated out by the below on field successes: -
u15 boys - Premiers
u16 boys - Grand Final winners
u18 boys - Grand Final winners
u13 boys - Grand Final runners up
u12 girls - Premiers (local Toowoomba u13 all girls Junior League)
u13 girls - Grand Final runners up
u15 girls - Grand Final runners up

As noted above with the introduction of two new all female teams in 2026 SWQ Thunder FC is working very hard to continue to increase the access and quality of our female football program. The Club has a dedicated Director of Female Football Development and are in the process of engaging a Female Football Development Officer to complement and extend the work of our Head of Junior Academy. More information to come about this appointment.
Our senior women and female team coaches have played a key role in providing a range of quality player development activities that are engaging with new female players and nurturing and developing the skills, capabilities and mindsets of our existing players. This has included through strong junior/senior mentoring arrangements, all ages training sessions, girls only coaching clinics and programs and strong celebrations of girls participation and outcomes.
The pathway for most girls will be to play in our girls only football teams. There is some flexibility to adjust this arrangement in the age groups where teams play locally in FQ Darling Downs competitions. Parents/players of this age will need to discuss this matter with our Club Technical Director or Director of Women's Football Development. Once players are of the age to play in FQ Academy teams, they are required to follow the girls only pathway.
FUTURE TEAMS
To support the continued growth of girls football, Football Queensland set the expectation that all FQ Academy clubs will enter an Under 14 Girls team in either the 2025 season (optional) or 2026 season (compulsory). This coming season sees the introduction of an Under 14 Thunder girls team. Thunder stands ready to fulfill any future obligations mandated by Football Queensland which further expand the female football footprint.
